How do I borrow eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and eMagazines for children?

We have a great range of eBooks and eAudiobooks for readers of all ages to download free onto a phone or tablet from our BorrowBox App.

Our 24-Hour Library allows you to access a range of useful online resources:

Encyclopedia Britannica Online  contains easy-to-use information, rich in pictures, videos and animations from a trusted source. There are versions of the encyclopedia tailored for adults, students aged 12 to 18 and children aged 5 to 11. It's the perfect place for all levels of research, including those tough homework questions!

Oxford Reference Online brings together language and subject reference works from one of the world's biggest and most trusted reference publishers. You’ll also find specialised Oxford resources such as Oxford Art Online, Oxford Music Online and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, as well as Oxford Dictionaries and the world famous Oxford English Dictionary whenever you need help with spelling and definitions.

 

Are there any sites offering learning activities for pre-school children?

ASCEL Bump Booster is a toolkit designed to help develop your child’s literacy skills even before they are born.

​​​​​ Tiny Happy People is a BBC site which uses simple activities and play ideas to help develop your child’s communication skills.

Where can I find tips on helping my child read?

Some respected national organisations have put together ideas and guidance for fun, simple activities that will engage your children, whilst benefiting their reading, writing and language development. Please continue to read aloud to your child to help nurture a love for reading for pleasure.

CILIP’s National Shelf Service - a new daily YouTube broadcast featuring book recommendations from professional librarians. Focusing on helping children and families discover new, diverse reading experiences, the broadcast runs Monday to Friday at 11.00 am each day.

National Literacy Trust Family Zone - a one-stop shop for families offering a free comprehensive online zone for parents seeking ideas and guidance for activities that will engage their children at home, whilst also benefiting their reading, writing and language development.
