This Girl Can Newcastle will bring its usual vibrant display of brightly dressed runners and walkers back to the park on Tuesday March 8.

The event, which usually sees thousands of entrants descend on Exhibition Park, offers either a one or three-mile course across the Town Moor for participants to complete.

This Girl Can Newcastle is held to celebrate International Women’s Day, and is organised by Active Newcastle with the aim of encouraging as many people as possible to lead more active lifestyles.

Cllr Karen Kilgour, Deputy Leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “In the last year alone there have been some high-profile cases of women being killed as they simply went about their business, such as Sarah Everard, and more recently, Aisling Murphy. Not only is this a great event for bringing people together, it’s also a chance for us a city to recognise International Women’s Day and highlight the vital role that women play in all walks of life, the contributions they make to society, and do our bit to promote women’s equality and safety.

“This Girl Can Newcastle is always one of the highlights of the year, and while obviously understandable, it was a real shame that it couldn’t take place last year.

“That’s why we’re so pleased that it’s able to return this year. It’s always a great sight seeing people lined up in their numbers dressed in bright and luminous clothes for the occasion and I’m really looking forward to the evening.”

Diana Gates, Events Coordinator for Urban Green Newcastle, said: “We’re so excited to see This Girl Can returning to Exhibition Park in March. A lot of regular events in our parks have been put on hold due to Covid and we’re delighted that we can welcome them back this year and continue to support such a fantastic cause.”

Lisa O’Keefe, from Sport England, said: “Many congratulations to all involved in organising this year’s event.

“It's always a highlight for me to see and hear those taking part encouraging, inspiring and celebrating that we're out here and we're doing it. Proving once again that in the North East ... This Girl Can.”

This Girl Can Newcastle starts at 6pm, with participants asked to arrive at Exhibition Park for 5:45pm. Given the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no market stalls at this year’s event.
