Electric and low carbon vehicles

Electric and low carbon vehicles

The North East is leading the way in the development of electric vehicles and leading the charge when it comes to installing electric vehicle charging points.

Newcastle City Council is committed to improving and increasing the charging network and supporting the growth of electric vehicle use. All of our charging posts are managed by Charge Your Car (CYC) who provide access methods for EV drivers and gather the charging data for us.

Website: http://chargeyourcar.org.uk/

There are a number of ways of accessing the charging points:

  • CYC card
  • CYC app
  • Automated phone line for paying without having to join CYC

The map on the CYC website shows where all the CYC charge points are and whether or not they are available. This is the best place to find up-to-date information.

What does it cost you?

From the 8th of October 2018, Newcastle City Council are introducing parking charges for the use of EV parking spaces in public car parks in the city. These charges will be the usual parking tariff for the car park or on-street parking location you are parked at.  Signage on tariff boards in car parks or on the ticket machine for on-street areas will provide information for the relevant parking charge.

This decision has been made following a review of EV parking in the City and following a consultation process.  A decision to implement charging was then made on the 13 August 2018 and full details of the Delegated Officer’s decision can be found at http://democracy.newcastle.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=7550

The reasons for this decision are as follows:

  • The volume of bays being using predominately as a means of free all day parking.
  • Bays not being available after the morning peak.
  • Discouraging others from buying EVs or entering the city, if they would be unable to have access to a bay for essential recharging

It is proposed that the charges will come into operation from Monday 8 October 2018. Each individual bay (or charging post) will have signage up prior to the charges commencing to advise of the forthcoming charges. This will confirm the exact date the charges will start from. After that date permanent signage will be installed to say parking charges apply.
