The Transportation Developments service is responsible for transport planning, policy development and scheme development and delivery. The service aims to:
- Undertake transport studies;
- Advise and develop transport policy;
- Deliver Local Transport Plan (LTP) schemes;
- Undertake Major Scheme Bids; and
- Deliver Major Schemes.
Transport studies are undertaken by Transport Developments to understand problems with movement in specific areas of the city. The results are used to inform work programmes and to help to identify funding to address these problems. Recently, transport studies have been undertaken in Gosforth and Ouseburn, aiming to identify problems experienced by pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and those in cars. Studies have also been undertaken in the city centre; for example the Haymarket and its connections to the universities, retail and residential areas of the city.
Major Scheme Bids and Delivery
Transport Developments create large transport schemes that require additional funding from central government due to their size and scope. As part of this, colleagues from across the Council, partners such as Nexus, bus operators, local councillors, businesses and residents are consulted to develop schemes that will provide a positive outcome for all. Transport Developments are then responsible for the delivery of these projects to ensure that the Council's policy objectives are met.
