What is a BID?

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a company established and run by the business community.

Its aim is to deliver services and projects that improve the local business environment. To do so it raises funds from businesses in that area.

A successful BID should be:

  • an effective leadership voice for business on operational and strategic issues
  • keeping business's interests at the top of the political agenda.
  • increasing footfall and trade
  • maximising an areas potential as a destination
  • creating a cleaner, more attractive and more vibrant environment
  • reducing retail crime and anti-social behaviour
  • creating a stronger, more diverse retail and leisure offer
  • marketing and promoting its district
  • encouraging investment

Newcastle NE1

Newcastle's business community vote in a ballot every five years to support or reject having a BID for the city centre.

In the most recent vote businesses voted 93% in favour of continuing BID for another five years, from 1 April 2024 until 31 March 2029.

Newcastle NE1 Business Improvement District (NE1) is the result of that ballot. NE1 manages the area that is subject to the BID levy in Newcastle City's NE1 area.
