Council Tax - Ways to pay your Council Tax
Set up or amend a Direct Debit
Paying by Direct Debit gives you a choice of 28 payment dates.
You can choose to pay over 12 months, weekly or fortnightly.
If you already pay by Direct Debit, you can change your arrangement and your bank details.
- Your council tax reference number (this is shown on your bill)
- Your bank account number and sort code
- If you are not the account holder or setting up a Direct Debit for a company this cannot be done online, please download a paper Direct Debit form and return.
You can pay your Council Tax using your Debit or Credit card free of charge. You will need to have your council tax reference number, which is shown on your bill, in order to make your payment.

Please quote your twelve digit council tax reference number to make sure your payment is allocated to your account and avoid the possibility of a reminder. This can be found under your address on your council tax bill.
Post Office or PayPoint
You can use the barcode on your bill to pay at the Post Office or PayPoint outlets in places like shops and local garages.
You can pay your Council Tax using your Debit or Credit card free of charge by phoning 0191 278 7878. You will need to have your council tax reference number, which is shown on your bill, in order to make your payment.
-When phoning to make a payment you should ask for "payments".
-When asked pleased state the payment you would like to make is "council tax".
You can set up a standing order with your bank. They will give you a form to fill in which you will need to complete quoting the monthly payments specified on your council tax bill.
