Vacancies have arisen for two Economic Development Officers (EDO) within the Economic Development Unit. The postholders will take a leading role in the development and delivery of two new externally funded programmes.

Newcastle Culture and Creative Zone.

This is a place-based approach to investing in the development, sustainability and growth of the culture and creative sector within Newcastle; specifically around the Clayton Street Corridor in the city centre.

The Zone will provide a supportive and attractive environment for creative and cultural businesses and people to locate, start-up, grow, and flourish. It will also provide stability and continuity for the sector, focusing on building confidence and resilience whilst over time positioning the area as a leading UK location for culture and creative sector growth.

We expect to see investment in a range of activities and interventions including affordable workspace for cultural and creative organisations; business support; skills development; and community engagement. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced culture-led regeneration professional to lead a regionally and nationally significant programme and to kick-start a vibrant cultural cluster in the city. Place Innovation: Newcastle Inner East renewal pilot

This pilot aims to transform a number of high streets in the Inner East of the city and address the impact of the pandemic and longer term economic and societal changes on this local centre by combining place-making, economic development including business support and community engagement activities.

Through collaboration with local stakeholders, we will develop a long-term investment plan and test new approaches to high streets renewal. This will include a range of interventions: supporting interim uses to animate the area (e.g. pop-up markets; cultural events), improving physical assets (e.g. buildings and public spaces), testing and formalising new uses of space such as culture, leisure, residential, and providing business support including grants.

We welcome applications from individuals with a track record in working in partnership with businesses and local communities and experience in communicating and delivering models of change at local level.

The postholders will work closely with colleagues within the Council, external funders, key stakeholders, businesses, sector representatives and members of the community. The postholders will facilitate or deliver individual projects within a programme portfolio, and ensure that priorities are set, conflicts are resolved, and resources are focused on the projects that will deliver strategic objectives.

Collaborative working will be crucial, and the postholders will be expected to think creatively and strategically to deliver outcomes. The roles are suitable for applicants with experience of delivering initiatives to help promote economic growth and an excellent understanding of the needs of our business communities.
