This post provides an opportunity to build on Newcastle City Council’s work in being one of the Government’s three ‘early adopter’ Homelessness Prevention Trailblazer areas from 2017 to 2019, and coincides with supporting Newcastle’s partnership with Crisis (the national charity for homeless people) to end homelessness, which was launched in 2019.

Our aim is, wherever possible, to prevent homelessness at the earliest stage by developing and coordinating responses to help residents to sustain the foundations for a stable life: somewhere to live, an income, financial inclusion and employment opportunities. To do this, the council works with 134 services and organisations as part of our Active Inclusion Newcastle partnership approach, aiming to make it everyone’s business to prevent homelessness and increase financial inclusion.

We hope that this opportunity will attract interest from people who are committed to preventing homelessness, promoting financial inclusion and improving our collective understanding to transform public services and make a measurable difference to residents. Our aim is to use this understanding to better predict the risk of homelessness and to support the ongoing development of a culture change in the delivery of advice and support to residents, based on adapting services to make sustaining independence the norm and responding to crisis homelessness the exception. This role includes developing and coordinating preventative work to support transitions when residents' circumstances change.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an understanding of both the importance of the above foundations for a stable life and how to support public service transformation in a changing national policy context, by developing and supporting initiatives that benefit both residents and the frontline staff who support them. This includes capturing the learning from our experiences to improve collective understanding, with this work bringing opportunities to use Newcastle’s experiences to not only inform local policy and practice, but to influence national government policy in this area.
