Newcastle Movement Strategy

Newcastle Movement Strategy

Help shape the future of transport in Newcastle

We are developing a new plan to improve transport in our city.
It's called a Movement Strategy, and we need your input to make it a success.

The Movement Strategy will look at how people and goods move around the city and what we can do to make this more efficient, sustainable, safe, accessible and inclusive.

We're carrying out a seven-week public consultation so that we can gather your views and feedback on what the city's transport network should look like.
Whether you walk, wheel, cycle, use public transport, or drive, this is your chance to help us create a transport network that’s better for everyone.

What is the Movement Strategy?

The Movement Strategy will guide Newcastle’s transport development until 2045. Our goal is to reduce traffic, improve public transport, promote active travel like walking, wheeling and cycling, and reduce carbon emissions, all while ensuring the transport system works for our residents, businesses and visitors.

Why your feedback matters

Your input will help shape the future of transport in Newcastle. We want to hear about your experiences and ideas for improving how we get around. By participating, you’ll help us address important challenges like:

•    Supporting people and businesses by improving access to jobs, education and other services.
•    Reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.
•    Making transport easier and fairer for all, including disabled people, families, and the elderly.
•    Building healthy habits and improving well-being by providing better public transport, walking, wheeling, and cycling infrastructure.

How you can get involved

There are several ways you can take part in the consultation:

Complete the online questionnaire
Share your thoughts on our proposed vision, principles, and actions for Newcastle’s transport network. Please read our information booklet before completing the online questionnaire

Join our public events
We’re hosting a number of events to explain the Movement Strategy and collect your feedback. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and share your ideas.

We will have an information display in the City Library, in the atrium level one, throughout the consultation.
We will also be holding the following drop in sessions where you can find out more and speak to members of the team:

  • Wednesday 23 October - Eldon Square, in the community quarter, 10.30am until 1.30pm.
  • Monday 28 October – RVI hospital, in front of the MediCinema, 10.30am until 1.30pm.
  • Monday 4 November – Eldon Square, in the community quarter, 3pm until 6pm.
  • Monday 11 November – RVI hospital in front of the MediCinema, 12.30pm until 4.30pm.
  • Wednesday 20 November – Grainger Market, 12.30pm until 4.30pm.
  • Monday 25 November - Grainger Market, 10.30am until 1.30pm.

Spread the word
Tell your friends, family, and neighbours about the consultation. The more people who share their views, the better we can shape the future of transport in Newcastle.

What happens next?

Once the consultation ends, we will review all the feedback and use it to develop the Movement Strategy. The final strategy will be presented to the Newcastle City Council Cabinet in Spring 2025, followed by an implementation plan to make our vision a reality.
