Families in Newcastle will see residential parking permits extended for free as a result of the coronavirus lockdown.
In recognition of those permit holders who have currently paid to park in residential parking zones, a free period – equivalent to the length of the lockdown – will be added when they come to renew.
Cllr Nick Kemp, cabinet member for environment and regulatory services, said: “As well as offering free parking in our pay and display spaces to support key workers we want to ensure that no-one with a permit for one of our residential permit parking areas is disadvantaged by the Covid-19 pandemic.
“That is why we will be adding free weeks to all newly renewed passes in recognition of the Government’s coronavirus lockdown, which started on March 23.”
How to receive the free extension
Current permit holders are being asked to renew in the normal way with a free period, equivalent to the length of the lockdown, added to the pass when the extent of the lockdown is known.
This includes all permit types within residential permit parking areas including resident; visitor; business; charity; landlord and tradesmen. It will also apply to city centre resident permit holders.
If you are having any difficulties in renewing your permit please email parkingpermits@newcastle.gov.uk.
If you don’t have a permit
If you do not have a residential parking permit, but are currently at home during the day, you can park in a controlled area until the current lockdown is lifted if you email parking@newcastle.gov.uk to let us know.
