At Christmas you are likely to end up with more things for recycling. Remember, all your glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, foil, food and drink cans, empty aerosols and drinks cartons can all be recycled in your blue bin. If you have Christmas cards without glitter or embellishments you can put these in your blue bin. Unfortunately most gift wrap is not suitable for recycling due to the glitter, plastic foil and sticky tape on it. That will need to go in your green bin.
Here are some tips to free up space in your blue bin over the festive season
- Flatten or squash recycling, such as cardboard and plastic bottles, before putting it in your recycling bin.
- Use one of our three larger Household Waste Recycling Centres. These accept a much wider range of items such as Christmas trees, cardboard, electrical items. Or you can simply drop off extra general waste.
We can also collect your bulky waste (there is a charge for this service). To request a bulky waste collection, complete an Envirocall online form here or phone 0191 278 7878.
Please note that this year collections during Christmas week will be 2 days later than normal, with crews working on Saturday 29 December and Sunday 30 December.
During the New Year week collections will be 1 day later than normal, with crews working on Saturday 5 January.
