Consultations

Consultations

Newcastle City Council is committed to giving everyone a say in our decision-making, and building relationships with people and organisations who use our services and live in the Newcastle area.

When we talk about consultation and engagement, we mean:

Consultation: Giving people a say in decisions that affect them before we start planning a project or making a change in Council policy that affects how we shape and deliver services. This is usually a legal requirement.
Engagement: The ongoing process of keeping residents, service users and organisations informed about what we are doing, providing opportunities to shape the local agenda, and developing relationships between the Council and local communities. We also aim to build capacity in communities and support community action.

From July 2022 onwards, we have eight goals for this work:

1. Have online and offline ways for people to take part, and use different formats such as videos, written information, etc.
2. Think about the language needs of all the different groups taking part.
3. Publish the goals of the consultation process at the start.
4. Focus on what we can achieve for residents, but be realistic about the limits of what we can and cannot offer.
5. Show people that their taking part makes a difference.
6. Use consultation and engagement methods that work for people who are currently not engaging with us.
7. Create a wide and ongoing conversation with residents, communities and organisations about their priorities.
8. Invite feedback on priorities and “big picture” considerations, use this to refine our ideas, then go back to people with our new proposals.
