Our Newcastle – Building an Inclusive Economy

Our Newcastle – Building an Inclusive Economy

We know that Newcastle’s economic successes are not felt by everyone and that if we want our city to succeed, we need to work together now on inclusive growth and anti-poverty.

We’ve been talking with residents, communities, businesses and other anchor organisations in Newcastle to develop an inclusive economy strategy and an anti-poverty strategy for the city that invite everyone to play their part in breaking down barriers to inclusion and improving quality of life.

These strategies were launched at our Conversation with Newcastle  event at the Discovery Museum on Tuesday 7 March 2023.

An Inclusive Economic Strategy for Newcastle

We can all see the great potential in Newcastle. We need a shift in mindset so that we can all seize it and maximise it for the benefit of every person, no matter where they live in our city.

Our challenge is to make sure that people who live here are part of our success at every level. This is what will drive Newcastle’s economic transformation and reduce the inequalities that hold our city and our people back.

There are many levers available to us in Newcastle for making change. From local ownership of business, buildings, land and resources, redirecting investment from global markets to local schemes, targeting recruitment and employment practices fairly and using our spending power to build local supply chains, working together to generate and retain more wealth and wellbeing in our city makes us stronger than the sum of our parts.

Our priority is to build an inclusive economy for Newcastle that is built on:

  1. Strong economic assets in all sectors, powered by...
  2. Innovation that drives inclusion, supported by...
  3. Affordable connectivity that works for all, generating...
  4. Wealth that flows to all communities, that underpins...
  5. Healthier lives: the foundation and the outcome of an inclusive economy

Our Anti-Poverty Strategy

Our vision is for Newcastle is to be a fair and inclusive city where everyone can lead full and happy lives free from poverty and inequality. Through the anti-poverty strategy, we set our three key priorities for tackling poverty in Newcastle:

  1. Preventing residents falling into poverty
  2. Targeted support for residents in poverty now
  3. Campaigning for long-term change

Make your own pledge

Delivering on our vision for Newcastle is only possible with the commitment and involvement of everyone in our city, including residents and organisations across the public, private and voluntary and community sectors.

In order to unlock Newcastle's potential we need others to commit to taking actions that promote fairness, equality, opportunity and innovation.

Your action can work towards building a healthier, inclusive city, where the benefits of economic growth are shared by all.

The Pledge is a formal, yet voluntary, commitment from organisations across Newcastle to take actions that demonstrates their support for inclusive growth across Newcastle.

Make your own pledge.
