Kingston Park Road West

Kingston Park Road West

Windsor Way Surfacing Works – Temporary Road Closure from 12 October for one week

We need to resurface the road between the junction of Kingston Park Road and Lichfield Close.

Works will take place between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

To carry out the works safely and efficiently the road will be closed between the junction with Kingston Park Road and the junction with Lichfield Close. Junctions with the side streets Soulby Court and Skelton Court will also be closed.

Access in and Out of Windsor Way will be from one end only near Lichfield Close and the junction with Kingston Park Road will be completely closed while works are taking place on site during the day shift.

Traffic Management operatives will be present at the junctions of Skelton Court, Lichfield Close and Soulby Court with Windsor Way to ensure access at all times for residents, while works are in progress.

Please note that all works are weather dependant, so times and durations may change.

Works to widen Kingston Park Road, which lies west of the A1 began in May 2019 as part of a £1.7m package of improvements to ease congestion on the approach to the busy A1 roundabout, alongside measures to improve the environment for pedestrians and people on bikes.

With major housing developments planned and being delivered nearby, we identified problem junctions – including Kingston Park Road and its link onto the A1 – that need investment to improve efficiency and journey time reliability, as well as providing greener travel choices and improve safety.

Kingston Park Road currently suffers from high levels of congestion at peak times, which can prevent cars exiting the Greenside estate and people cutting through Windsor Way to avoid the main road.

We are widening the road to allievate pressure on the approach to the A1 and reduce congestion, similar to work undertaken on Fawdon Lane in 2017, which has improved traffic flow on a key commuter route.

As part of the improvements package, we will install road safety measures such as raised tables to deter speeding in residential streets, as well as new cycling and walking facilities to improve local access.

In order to preserve that mature trees alongside Kingston Park Road, the walking and cycling facilities will be installed along Windsor Way and Fawdon Walk, which will also connect to existing cycling infrastructure.

The £1.5m package has been funded through local housing developers.

Following the suspension of works due to Covid-19, work re-commenced at this scheme in mid-May 2020, taking place during off-peak hours to minimise disruption. Work is being completed in line with social distancing measures. We are assessing the impact of this on the completion date of this scheme, and will update here when possible.

Upcoming works

  • Work will continue at the Kingston Park Road / Windsor Way junction, with the new, permanent signals installed in July
  • Work will commence at Kingston Park Road close to the A1, following on to Fawdon Walk
  • Work will take place on the roundabout in agreement with Highways England
  • We are working with City Fibre on their works in this area to ensure they are coordinated with our works
  • Once these works are complete, re-surfacing will take place
