Acorn Road, Jesmond

We transformed Acorn Road in Jesmond into a cycle-friendly shopping area. The improvements, funded by the Cycle City Ambition Fund, included changing the street to one-way to reduce traffic flow, making it safer for people on foot and bikes and making the road more attractive for people who shop in the area.

Changes to Acorn Road included:

• Raising the road surface to the levels of footpaths making it easier for pushchairs
• Widening pavements – to allow for pavement cafes and making it easier for people to get around
• New public seating and landscaping improvements with a tree lined avenue
• Introducing smart traffic lights at the junction with Osborne Road
• Introducing a contra flow system for people on bikes to enable them to pedal in both directions
• Turning the street into one way for traffic
