Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone
Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone
A clean air zone (CAZ) is now in place for parts of Newcastle and Gateshead to:
- help improve air quality
- reduce the number of high polluting vehicles using our roads
For full details about the CAZ visit our Breathe Clean Air website.
In Newcastle the clean air zone covers:
- the city centre
- routes over the River Tyne, including the Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges
Not all vehicles are affected. You will not be charged if you are driving a:
- private car
- motorbike
- vehicle that meets minimum emissions standards
If you drive an older taxi, van, bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) visit our Breathe Clean Air website to get information and advice on:
- checking your vehicle and whether your route is within the CAZ
- applying for a vehicle upgrade grant towards the cost of a cleaner vehicle
- local exemptions and how to apply
- how to pay a CAZ charge and when you need to make a payment
