Recycle Week 2021: Competition

Recycle Week 2021: Competition

Recycle Week 2021 takes place from September 20 to 26 and as part of our efforts to encourage more people to "bin it right" we are running a competition for schoolchildren in the city.

What is Recycle Week?

Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling that aims to encourage the public to recycle more, by demonstrating the benefits of recycling items from all around the home.

Now in its 18th year, it sees retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often.

As part of this we are delivering our latest recycling information guidance to all Newcastle homes, so look out for the leaflet coming through your door.

Recycling Week competition

Primary school pupils are being asked to tell us “Why is Recycling Important?” - with competition winners having the city’s recycling wagons named in their honour.

This Recycling Week we’re inviting children to share, in a couple of sentences, their views on the importance of disposing of everyday items such as glass bottles, pop cans, plastic pots and paper properly.

Prizes

There will be a prize for every entrant.

The authors of the top 10 entries will also have one of our recycling collection vehicles named after them, for a year, and will have the opportunity to have a photograph taken with their namesake wagon.

Those 10 winning children will also be invited to be filmed telling us why recycling is important, with the clip used to promote their important message about putting the right waste in the right place to residents and businesses across Newcastle.

Materials for teachers

To support the competition we have an Introduction to Recycling PowerPoint for teachers of primary school classes.

This can be used as part of a recycling or environmental education lesson and may provide inspiration and information for children before they write their entries.

To request a copy of the presentation please email keepitclean@newcastle.gov.uk.

How to Enter

Each submission must be from one child only.

To submit any entrants from your school, please send the entry, along with the full name, class and age of the child to keepitclean@newcastle.gov.uk

Entries can be collated and sent together.

Closing date

The closing date for entries is Friday November 5 2021.
