About us

Newcastle City Council published the city’s first Inclusive Economic Strategy in 2023, contributed to and endorsed by key city partners. The Strategy set out our commitment to creating an inclusive economy, where wealth flows to all.

Following changes to our senior management structure we are now recruiting for a mission critical role which will work in partnership to lead our physical and economic transformation, to continue to translate the Strategy into action, and to deliver better outcomes for our residents, businesses, and communities.

The role

Our Assistant Director for Capital Investment and Growth will lead on the delivery of major projects and capital investment that are critical to the economic growth of the city and wider region. They will also lead our work around regeneration and economic development in our neighbourhoods, ensuring capital programmes and regeneration funding are harnessed to deliver our inclusive economic objectives.

The role will work closely with the Leader of the Council, whose portfolio includes major development projects, and the Cabinet Member for Thriving City, who directs our inclusive economy work. Supporting the Leader of the Council in their role as the Economy portfolio holder for the North East Combined Authority, ensuring that the city maximises the benefit of NECA investment and influence, and plays a full part in driving the regional economy forward.

The role will also work closely with council officers in Transport, Planning, Housing, and Net Zero, amongst others, to provide input to key strategies and delivery programmes that will shape our economic outcomes.

What we are looking for

You will have an extensive track record of creating and successfully delivering capital programmes which deliver inclusive economic growth, ideally in an urban setting. You will understand and be able to evidence how capital development and regeneration can drive improved outcomes through social value and give visible leadership to our ambitions in this aspect of growth. As well as providing leadership to our key city development sites, you will work with colleagues across the organisation to inform capital projects and programmes for education, housing, transport and other service areas. You will also have experience of local regeneration programmes, working with communities to deliver not just physical change but improved economic and social outcomes.

You will also be required to influence strong relationships, networks and partnerships across the public and private sector at a local, regional, national and international level to make a demonstrable difference.
