Newcastle Bridges School is seeking to appoint an outstanding SEN Teacher to join our successful team. The SEN post is appropriate for teachers who have experience working with a range of SEN needs from mild to profound and multiple learning disabilities. Flexibility, adaptability and an understanding of the specific needs of our students are essential requirements of the post.

Newcastle Bridges School provides excellent educational opportunities to pupils whose education has been interrupted by mental or physical ill-health or school phobia. We seek to support each pupil’s access to a full-time, broad and balanced education appropriate to their potential and their educational needs and encourage reintegration into mainstream whenever relevant. The successful candidate will therefore contribute to supporting some of the most vulnerable young people within the city and surrounding areas, striving to make a difference in their lives.

Newcastle Bridges School was judged by Ofsted to be ‘outstanding’ (May 2022).

The Great North Children’s Hospital is a regional hospital for many specialised services within paediatrics. The intake of patients covers a wide Geographical area; north to the Scottish Borders, west to Cumbria and south to North Yorkshire. It also serves the national and international community as a centre of excellence. The Children’s Heart Unit at the Freeman Hospital provides care for children who need medical or surgical help for conditions involving the heart, lungs and airways. It is one of two units in the UK to carry out heart and lung transplants on children.

At the GNCH and Freeman Hospital we endeavour to support all pupils to achieve their potential, inspire a love of learning and to minimise disruption to their education whilst overcoming barriers to learning posed by a variety of medical conditions. We work closely with multidisciplinary teams to provide personalised learning experiences based on individual needs and interests and to support pupils to overcome their personal challenges.

We provide teaching across 10 wards with most teaching taking place 1:1 at the bedside. We make early contact with and work closely with home schools and where possible young people will follow their schemes of work and planning, though we will always ensure that this is adapted where necessary to take full account of individual educational, medical, social and emotional needs. Through assessment and communication with home schools we are able to identify any gaps in learning that may have occurred due to illness and absence from school, we then work with the young person to support the continuation of learning whilst targeting any gaps in learning or other needs that are identified.

This is an exciting opportunity for an excellent practitioner to join our outstanding school and work in a challenging yet rewarding environment. We would like to hear from candidates who feel that they can demonstrate the characteristics and skills we are looking for and hold the relevant qualifications to meet the demands of this post.

We are striving to further build collaboration across the schools and grow as a Multi Academy Trust, whilst continuing to strengthen our relationships with schools outside the MAT for the benefit of our pupils.

Whilst these posts will be based at the GNCH and Freeman Hospital, there could be a requirement to work at another of our provisions. Similarly, as the successful candidates will be employed by Prosper Learning Trust, they will be expected to work at any Prosper Learning Trust site should the need arise.
