Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licence policy

Hackney Carriage and Private Hire licence policy

Newcastle City Council Licensing Authority has implemented a new Hackney Carriage & Private Hire Licensing Policy. The aims of this policy are to:

•    Ensure the safety and protection of the public
•    Ensure taxis are safe, clean, reliable and accessible
•    Provide clarity on our expectations and decision making processes
•    Ensure that licenced drivers and operators are fit and proper
•    Encourage environmental sustainability

Though many of the previous conditions remain the same, there are some significant changes adopted as part of the policy intended to enhance safety of the travelling public. :

•    Improve public recognition of Newcastle City Council licensed Taxis and Private Hire Vehicles
•    Licenced Vehicles will be able to install CCTV cameras in line with the Information Commissioners Officers requirements
•    Provide an enhanced vetting process for “fit and proper” checks to be made of licensees.

Following extensive consultation, trade engagement and approval by full Council, Newcastle City Council Hackney Carriage & Private Hire Licensing Policy will have immediate effect from 1st November 2023.
