What to bring to your appointment


If you're an EU citizen, you and your family will be able to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021. If your application is successful, you’ll get either settled or pre-settled status.

The deadline for applications will be 30 June 2021 – or alternatively the earlier date of 31 December 2020 should the UK leave the EU without a deal.

Newcastle City Council is one of the local authorities supporting EU, EEA and Swiss citizens completing the ID verification part of the process.

Please note there will be no change to current rights under EU law until the end of the planned implementation period on either 31 December 2020 or 30 June 2021.

Applying for pre-settled or settled status is done via an online form which can be found on the website .

As part of the process you will need to scan and verify your biometric ID documents. To do this yourself you will need a compatible device. This can be your own phone or tablet or someone else’s. 

To use an Android phone or tablet the device will need to have Near Field Communication (NFC). You can check if a phone has NFC by searching for 'NFC' in the phone's Settings. You will not be able to download the app with a phone that does not have NFC.

The ‘ID Document Check’ beta app is also now available for iPhone 8 and newer models, and will be available on the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus shortly.

As part of the scheme Newcastle Registration Service can support you in your application by scanning and verifying your passport or biometric permit for you. If you do not have access to a compatible device with NFC technology, and you are eligible to apply for settled status, you can make an appointment to bring your ID document to us. We will scan and verify your document and you can then make your online application for settled status.

We will not need to keep your ID document and in most cases you should not be asked to send your passport anywhere else during your application for settled status.

What to bring to your appointment

  • Your current valid biometric EU passport or valid biometric residence card
  • A mobile phone that can receive text messages or a device that can receive emails

The cost of the ID verification service is £14 (including VAT) which is payable at the time of booking. Payment can be made by credit or debit card over the phone. Cash payments can be made by visiting the Register Office, Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8QH. If you are unable to attend your appointment you should let us know at least 24 hours beforehand. If you cannot attend and you do not let us know your fee will not be refunded.
