Christon Road/Great North Road – Moving Traffic Enforcement
Christon Road/Great North Road – Moving Traffic Enforcement
Enforcement of the yellow box junction by static camera will begin at the Christon Road/Great North Road junction in Autumn 2025. This will be the first site in the area where such enforcement is introduced.

Why this location?
Concerns have been raised about the safety and efficiency of the yellow box junction at this location, particularly during peak times due to its proximity to nearby schools. The junction frequently becomes blocked, preventing vehicles from turning right from Christon Road onto Great North Road. This has led to an increase in dangerous driving behaviour, with some drivers using the wrong side of the road to exit the junction.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
Northumbria Police, Newcastle City Council, local councillors, and representatives from nearby schools and the community have been actively involved in discussions to find a solution. It was agreed that this junction is a strong candidate for enforcement measures.
A six-week public consultation concluded on 27 January 2023. Of the 90 responses received, 65 supported the proposal—indicating strong public backing for enforcement at this location.
