Elswick Road cycle track extension and pedestrian safety improvements

Elswick Road cycle track extension and pedestrian safety improvements

The proposal is for the stretch of Elswick Road between Sovereign Place and St John’s Road.

It includes:

  • Providing cycle lanes on both sides of the road protected by bolt down kerbs.
  • Creating new pedestrian crossings over Elswick Road near St John’s Road, Bentick Road, and Durham Street.
  • Tightening some junctions to reduce the speed of traffic.
  • Installing a new signalised junction at Grainger Park Road inc. the exit from Elswick Cemetery.
  • Removing the outdated chicanes and traffic islands.
  • Changes to traffic movements in and out of some side streets.
  • Improvements at bus stops to cater for passengers and cyclists.

A plan of the scheme is available here
