Newcastle High Streets Project

Newcastle High Streets Project

NEW  Our Adelaide Terrace scheme is now live

About the project

Newcastle has a number of local high streets across its neighbourhoods and we know that some are thriving, while others are facing challenges, but we also know all of them are vital to local communities and home to valued local businesses and community facilities.
Through the Newcastle High Streets Project, we are inviting everyone to help shape the places where they live, work or spend time. Our aim is to create high streets that feel more lively, welcoming and safe.

Funding from the North East Combined Authority has helped us test a new way of supporting neighbourhoods. We’ve been focusing on high streets in the inner east of the city, including Chillingham Road, Heaton Park Road, Heaton Road, Shields Road and Welbeck Road, along with the areas around them. This funding has helped us try new ideas and begin long‑term improvements.

People who live, work or study in these areas have shared what matters most to them. This includes feedback from residents, businesses, schools and community groups. Their views have helped us set priorities for each high street. We’re now using this feedback to provide the right support and make targeted improvements. This includes business support, grant schemes, community events such as the regular programme on Hadrian Square in Byker, and physical improvements like the Chillingham Road rain garden.

Chillingham Road Rain Garden (next to Chillingham Road Primary School, Heaton)

A small urban garden with young trees and plants in the centre of a street. There are red‑brick houses on both sides. A bright mural on a nearby wall shows colourful shapes and the words “Growing Together”. The sky is blue with light clouds.

Hadrian Square Events Programme, Illuminating Byker 2025

A large crowd gathers in a town square at night for an outdoor event. Decorative trees with warm lights line the space. In the centre stands a large illuminated sculpture shaped like an octopus, glowing blue and green. Buildings and shopfronts surround the square, creating a lively atmosphere.

The project has now been extended to the west of the city, to Adelaide Terrace, Benwell, where we are taking a similar approach and working closely with local partners to re-energise this high street and plan for its future development.
