A citywide conversation has been launched today to help shape the vision for culture in Newcastle covering the next decade.
A citywide conversation has been launched today to help shape the vision for culture in Newcastle covering the next decade.
Having consulted with key stakeholders including artists, owners of venues and cultural businesses, the views of citizens are now being sought before the vision is finalised and unveiled in Spring next year.
Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet member for Employment and Culture said: “We want to make sure our great city continues to offer and support cultural activities which are accessible to everybody, distinctive to the people and place.
“We have world class museums, theatres and galleries – a Premier League football club, a burgeoning reputation for being the go to place for mass participation events such as the Rugby World Cup and Northern Pride Festival to name but two.
“Newcastle is a diverse, welcoming city and it is important our cultural sector reflects this, embracing innovation providing opportunities for people whatever their age or background to participate and enjoy.”
Over the next few weeks the city council will be holding a series of pop-up events and face-to-face consultation with representative community groups.
The council will also be running a short survey on Let’s Talk Newcastle asking citizens to tell it what culture means to them and what they would like to see more of across the city.
The feedback will be used, alongside the views already gathered from other stakeholders, to shape the vision and delivery of culture up until 2030.
Cllr Bell said: “I would urge everyone to make their voice heard so we can deliver the best cultural offering for all – building on our tradition, embracing the new so everyone be they resident or visiting can experience what this vibrant city of ours is all about.”
