Community Champions

Community Champions

COVID-19 and the various measures taken to manage the virus and protect us continue to impact everyone in Newcastle.

It is now more important than ever to ensure that Newcastle residents stay up to date with the latest guidance and advice, which aims to keep us and our city safe.

The Community Champion network is made up of a wide range of volunteers from across the city and helps residents to stay up to date on the latest guidance so they can protect themselves and others against the virus.

Please note that being a Community Champion is not an enforcement or regulatory role.

What we ask our Community Champions to do

As a Community Champion, you'll be able to share the latest information with your friends, family or people you know. This could be in a conversation, through social media, on the telephone, via a Zoom call or any way that suits you. But do remember, if you are speaking to people face-to-face you must adhere to safety guidelines and follow social distancing measures.

By sharing the latest information and guidance with people you know, you could help to keep people safe and reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.

There are no special requirements to be Community Champion - if you're in touch with your friends, family, people in your community or colleagues from your workplace we would love your help.

Community Champions Plus

If you would like to do more than just share messages remotely, then you might be interested in signing up to be   a ‘Community Champion Plus’.  Just like the Community Champions, you'll play an essential role in the sharing of information within your family, friendship groups, workplace, networks and communities, helping us with myth busting and ensuring people get the right information in a way that works for them.

You will also take part in regular online meetings with Public Health and other council representatives. You will help us to gather insight about what's working well in our communities and what isn't. We need you to tell us the key issues affecting your community as well as questions people are asking and what could be done better.  In turn you will hear about what we are doing to support our communities, what the latest evidence is telling us, what we think this means for you, your family, friends and communities, what we're learning and how we're going to respond.  You'll have the opportunity to ask questions to get the information you want and need, and you'll be helping us to shape services and to inform the way we respond to the virus.

As a Community Champion Plus there will be a key contact for you to speak to if there are any issues. If there is any training required, we will support you with this too.

Champion pledge

The purpose of the Community Champion scheme is to help ensure that residents across Newcastle hear correct and consistent information about Covid-19 to help keep them safe. We recognise that there is often debate and sometimes disagreement, but our role is to tell people what the rules are so they can work out how to apply them to their everyday lives. Therefore, as a Community Champion, you are asked to sign a pledge, which requires that any information or advice you circulate comes from the council or the government. You do not make political statements in respect of the Covid-19 arrangements.  You do not debate the merits of the guidance, or criticise the government, council, or partners – if somebody is incorrect, simply signpost to the correct information. This is to ensure that key messages are not undermined.  You must not apply your own interpretation of the guidelines – if in doubt, please ask the council for clarification.

Champions Legacy

Our Community Champions programme has been launched in direct response to the Covid-19 epidemic, however, as we move into the recovery phase we recognise that the network of Champions will provide us with an invaluable consultation and engagement avenue about wider community issues. To this end there may be times you will hear from other areas of the council who seek your feedback or need to share key information that impact our communities.

Please note, participation in non Covid-19/ post Covid-19 engagement is voluntary and you are able to opt out at any time.

How to become a Community Champion

Due to the overwhelming response we have had to our Community Champions programme we have temporarily suspended our Expression of Interest form. This is so we can ensure we are properly resourced internally and able to offer Champions the support they may require.

If you have already submitted an Expression of Interest please be reassured we have not forgotten you and will be in touch as soon as we have everything in place.

Once we are in a position to open the programme once more we will update this page.

Please check back again soon, and thank you for your interest and patience.
